Keyman with Oji-Cree Syllabics Usage

Keyman installs an icon in your system tray in the bottom right hand corner beside the Time.  To enable the syllabics keyboard, you will have to click the icon and choose which keyboard type you want to use and then start typing.  To disable it you need to click the K icon again and choose No Keyman Keyboard.  You can use it with any program that supports Unicode type fonts.  Older versions of some software may not work properly with it.

Lets try it out with Microsoft Word.

  1. Start Microsoft Word , you should have a new blank document in front of you
  2. Change your font to Aboriginal Sans in the font picker. Figure 1
  3. Click the icon in the system tray and choose Oji-Cree right dot.

The K icon should turn into a medicine wheel

  1. To type syllabics, you need to type phonetically as it would sound in the English alphabet. For example, type:
    m i n i k w a k a n
and it should automatically convert it to syllabics so it looks like:
    ᒥᓂᑾᑲᐣ
It will automatically add the w-dot ᐧ to the syllable as you type.
  2. If you want to make a syllable a long vowel like , then type in the semi-colon key ; after you type in the vowel, for example typing in:
    m i ; n i k w a ; k a n
    would create:
    ᒦᓂᒀᑲᐣ
  3. To stop typing in syllabics click the icon and choose No Keyman Keyboard.  Now you keyboard should work normally.

Other Typing Tips

  1. If you do not want the final to combine with the vowel, holding down the shift key with the vowel will keep them separate.
  2. If you want to type the w-dot as a separate character, press the U key on the keyboard.
  3. Punctuation: By default the period . key will give the Cree Curly quotes “ ” and angle quotes « » have been placed on the square bracket [ ] and curly bracket { } keys respectively.
  4. Pressing the CAPS LOCK key will turn the keyboard back into a regular English keyboard.  You can use it to switch back and forth quickly without always clicking the K icon.

Now you should be able to add syllabics to any of your documents and print them.  To access existing classroom resources, go to kwayaciiwin.com, sign-up for an account and download resources there.
